Journey to the Center of the Earth

Posted by admin under Adventure & Roleplay

Journey to the Center of the Earth is an adventure game set in the world of the classic novel. In Journey to the Center of the Earth you take the place of Ariane, an ambitious young photojournalist on assignment in Iceland. While traveling over an uninhabited area of the Icelandic wild Ariane’s helicopter crashes in the crater of an old volcano, triggering a landslide which reveals a hidden passageway deep underground into the earth’s core. When Ariane emerges from the passage she finds herself transported to another realm, a forgotten world hidden beneath the earth, a primeval land whose inhabitants have evolved completely independent of the world above. Join Ariane in the journey of a lifetime.

Ariane starts her journey from the crash site where she manages to recover a few useful items: her laptop, camera and lighter. Both the laptop and camera stay with Ariane for the entire journey. The laptop is useful for sending SOS’s, getting news, writing letters and storing the photos. When an important item is added to the laptop, an icon appears with a small sound letting you know that something new has been added. Right after the crash you are saddled with quite a number of items beside the laptop, camera and lighter, many which you must combine to use. Those who are not familiar with adventure games, may be a little confused on what to do with so may things at one time.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a point-n-click adventure, complete with inventory gathering, puzzles and traveling to interesting localities. The puzzles for the most part are inventory-based on things you pick up or already have. Most puzzles are logical but in some puzzles you must combine items to complete it. Which makes some of the puzzles a little challenging. Most puzzles fit in well with the context and overall plot of the game and doesn’t feel like they were just put in the game just to have a puzzle there. Like most adventure games, Journey to the Center of the Earth has its fair share of fun and frustrating puzzles. Determining the proper course of action from such generalities is very tough and it’s just a matter of trial and error. Some the puzzles just come down to searching your inventory and just guessing. Some other puzzles are fun, challenging and straightforward.

The graphics are very nice, with sharp, clear definition and detail. Journey to the Center of the Earth benefits from some of the best pre-rendered backgrounds for its great look. The animation compares well with other games currently out, and the locations are very nice to look at. The character models on the other hand are stiff and unrealistic and look a little unfinished. The interior of the buildings look good with a lot of detail with books, beakers and furniture in the interior of the buildings. Journey to the Center of the Earth also has a nice mixture of 3D objects and backgrounds to create the sense of an active world.

The background music is an orchestral score that fits the game and keeps with the flow of the game.
The background music is very upbeat and works well with the overall game. There’s a great sense of timing for the background music. It does not play constantly in the background and they introduce a new piece of music every time you enter a new area. When the music fades you hear the very well done background noises like crickets. Voice acting is well done with each character having their own unique voice. Voice acting sounds authentic within the environment you are in.

Controls for Journey to the Center of the Earth are the basic point and click as all adventure games have. There are a few things that are hard to find and control such as the things that you are standing on that you need. You must move the arrow over your feet to find them. It’s also hard to zero in on some very small items that you need or where you need to move to. Overall the controls are good, it’s just hard to see and move some of the things you need to solve some of the puzzles.
