Damn Small is a very versatile 50MB mini desktop oriented Linux distribution. DSL was originally developed as an
experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal
tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into
refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and
restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device.
DSL has a nearly complete desktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen with the best balance of
functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live
CD. In our quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop we’ve made many GUI administration tools which
are fast yet still easy to use. What does DSL have?
XMMS (MP3, CD Music, and MPEG), FTP client, Dillo web browser, Netrik web browser, FireFox, spreadsheet,
Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor (Ted), three editors (Beaver, Vim, and Nano [Pico clone]),
graphics editing and viewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf (PDF Viewer), emelFM (file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC),
VNCviwer, Rdesktop, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE (ADSL), a web server, calculator, generic
and GhostScript printer support, NFS, Fluxbox and JWM window managers, games, system monitoring apps, a host of
command line tools, USB support, and pcmcia support, some wireless support.

Damn Small is small enough and smart enough to do the following things:
• Boot from a business card CD as a live linux distribution (LiveCD)
• Boot from a USB pen drive
• Boot from within a host operating system (that’s right, it can run *inside* Windows)
• Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call “frugal install”
• Transform into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install
• Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram
• Run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!)
• Modularly grow — DSL is highly extendable without the need to customize

openSUSE 11.0 - Final

Posted by admin under Linux-Unix

The openSUSE project is a worldwide community program sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. After acquiring SUSE linux in January 2004, Novell decided to release the SUSE Professional product as a 100% open source project, involving the community in the development process. The program provides free and easy access to openSUSE. openSUSE also provides the base for Novell’s award-winning SUSE linux Enterprise products.

Beyond the distribution, openSUSE provides a web portal for community involvement. The community assists in developing openSUSE collaboratively with representatives from Novell by contributing code through the open Build Service, writing documentation, designing artwork, fostering discussion on open mailing lists and in Internet Relay Chat channels, and improving the openSUSE site through its wiki interface. Novell markets openSUSE as the best, easiest distribution for all users.

Like most distributions it includes both a default graphical user interface (GUI) and a command line interface option; it allows the user (during installation) to select which GUI they are comfortable with (either KDE or GNOME), and supports thousands of software packages across the full range of open source development.

The goals of the openSUSE project are:
* Make openSUSE the easiest Linux distribution for anyone to obtain and the most widely used open source platform.
* Provide an environment for open source collaboration that makes openSUSE the world’s best Linux distribution for new and experienced Linux users.
* Dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.

With the launch of the openSUSE project, openSUSE is now developed in an open model - public development builds, releases, and sources will be posted frequently here and you will have access to our Bugzilla database for defect reporting. You can also sign up on special interest mailing lists to make sure that you are always getting the most recent news on the openSUSE project and the openSUSE distribution.

openSUSE shares many features with SUSE Linux Enterprise offerings, for example:
* AppArmor: gives certain applications rights based on how they run and interact with the environment.
* YaST: a system management application which openSuSE uses as a Control Center.
* Xen: virtualization software
* The KDE (extended with such tools as Kickoff and KNetworkManager) and GNOME desktop environments
* Compiz: a 3D desktop that runs on XGL.

Pardus 2008.1

Posted by admin under Linux-Unix

New version of the Pardus project, Pardus 2008, improved by the latest technologies and up-to-date applications, has been released. As always, Pardus 2008, is being freely distributed under the terms of GNU General Public License (GPL). In compliance with the main goals of the Pardus project, Pardus 2008 has lots of new features for ease of installation and use, both at the infrastructure and interface level. In addition Pardus 2008 provides enhanced hardware support, stable and reliable Linux infrastructure and numeruous applications on a single CD. You will go through a brand new experience of freedom, using Pardus 2008
Why Pardus?

The following observations are revealed when we examine the place of the operating systems in the area of information technology in our country, the sectors they indirectly affect and their relations with the development motion in general:

* An operating system is required on which critical applications can work for the purpose of national defense, security and savings, which supports an open and standard data structure, whose source code is open as to allow for security monitoring and which can be deployed without suffering any financial burden.
* Redirecting the activities in Turkey about the information technology toward the value added projects and focusing on the high technology based on research and development activities are required.
* It is compulsory that the local data buildup which is both prerequisite and the result of such buildup are ensured in terms of both technological field and business processes.
* It should be preferred to determine the direction of the technological development, to change the weight of differing areas and thus to be dominant on the roadmap of the said operating system depending on the requirements of the country.

Proceeding from that, it has been decided to enter into business to create a Linux-based distribution.

Pardus Vision

It is necessary to define the area to be covered over time by the distribution in order to make various high level preferences and determinations.

* The distribution shall become an operating system distribution in the vertical markets with differing versions, in various use styles and areas, preferred, used and deployed in every sections of the society.
* Although a non-profit organization, a sustainable organization shall be created which can stand by means of the business models to be created and used, and with its own resources.
* The developers shall make original contributions to the Linux and open source society on a global scale by brining applicable and innovation solutions to the existing technological problems.

Pardus Aims

* To provide full Turkish support by making the character structure compatible to Turkish (UTF-8 compatibility) and by making all the messages and documents visible to users into Turkish.
* To ensure that it is an operating system which can be installed and used more easily than the existing Linux distributions and other competitive operating systems.
* Designing its in a modular configuration which can achieve the required flexibility and high performance with a task-based and human-focused approach rather than a tool-based and technology-based one.
